Reef Beginner 5–18m None Year-round

Gamat Bay is a small, sheltered cove on the west coast of Nusa Penida, near Crystal Bay. A healthy reef slopes gently from the shallows to about 18 metres, with excellent coral coverage and an abundance of juvenile fish that use the bay as a nursery habitat.

The bay's sheltered position makes it one of the calmest dive sites in the Nusa Penida area. When swell and current shut down Crystal Bay and Manta Point, Gamat Bay usually remains diveable. It's the default backup site for rough conditions and works well as a gentle second or third dive.

What Gamat Bay lacks in drama it makes up for in coral health. The hard coral formations here are some of the best-preserved on Nusa Penida, with dense staghorn and table coral colonies providing habitat for a rich collection of reef species.

Outstanding hard coral coverage with healthy soft coral patches. The reef is a nursery habitat, so expect large numbers of juvenile fish — baby reef sharks, juvenile Napoleon wrasse, small sweetlips, and clouds of damselfish and anthias.

Turtles are common, often resting on coral heads or feeding on sponges. Reef octopus, cuttlefish, and various moray eels occupy the reef structure. Nudibranchs and flatworms are plentiful for macro hunters.

The sandy patches between coral areas occasionally hold blue-spotted rays and the odd seahorse. Not a site for big pelagic encounters, but excellent for reef diversity and photography.

Sheltered bay with minimal current and no significant swell. Entry by boat, calm surface conditions. Visibility is typically 10-20 metres. The gentle slope and shallow maximum depth make this an easy, relaxed dive.

This is where operators bring students and nervous divers before progressing to Crystal Bay. The conditions are as benign as Nusa Penida gets.

Gamat Bay is the Nusa Penida site that underwater photographers should not skip. The coral coverage is pristine and the shallow depth means natural light makes wide-angle reef shots easy without strobes.

Take your time through the staghorn coral sections. The juvenile fish hiding in the branches are endearing and photograph well. The turtles here are well accustomed to divers and allow close approaches.

This is the best backup site when conditions shut down the south coast. Don't be disappointed if you end up here instead of Manta Point — it's a legitimately good dive, just a different experience.

For snorkellers in your group, Gamat Bay is the best option on Nusa Penida. The shallow reef comes right up to 2-3 metres and the water is calm enough for comfortable snorkelling.

Same access as Crystal Bay — fast boat from Sanur to Nusa Penida, then a short boat ride along the west coast. Gamat Bay is about 5 minutes by boat from Crystal Bay and is usually combined with it on multi-dive day trips.

Camera with macro or mid-range lens for the coral and juvenile fish. Wide angle works for the reef panoramas. No special exposure suit or equipment needed — this is an easy, warm, shallow dive.

Same as Crystal Bay operators. Usually combined in a multi-dive day trip. All Nusa Penida-based operators include Gamat Bay in their site rotation.

Not a liveaboard destination.
