Mabul exists in Sipadan's shadow, and that's actually its advantage. While everyone talks about the barracuda tornadoes and shark walls next door, Mabul has quietly become one of Southeast Asia's premier muck diving destinations. The sandy slopes and rubble patches around this small island are home to an extraordinary density of macro critters that draw underwater photographers from around the world.

The house reefs and purpose-built artificial structures deliver the goods. Frogfish in at least four colour variations sit on sponges in plain sight. Blue-ringed octopus tuck into crevices at 8 metres. Flamboyant cuttlefish walk across the sand on their modified arms, pulsing colour like tiny neon signs. Bobtail squid bury themselves in the sand by day and emerge at dusk. Mandarin fish do their mating dance at specific rubble piles every evening just before dark. If you carry a macro lens, Mabul is the kind of place where 60 minutes and 50 metres of lateral movement produces enough photos for a month of editing.

The diving is shallow, calm, and endlessly repeatable. Most sites sit between 5 and 18 metres, with minimal current and near-unlimited bottom time on nitrox. Night diving at Mabul is particularly rewarding, bringing out critters that hide during the day: stargazers, various octopus species, and an impressive variety of shrimp and crabs.

Practically, Mabul serves as the accommodation base for Sipadan diving. Several resorts and budget lodges sit on the island, plus the converted Seaventures oil rig offshore. Most operators offer packages combining Sipadan permit days with unlimited Mabul house reef diving. The typical stay runs 4 to 7 nights, giving you 2 to 3 Sipadan permit days and the rest on Mabul's reefs. Access and logistics mirror Sipadan: fly to Tawau, drive to Semporna, boat to Mabul. Year-round diving, best visibility from April to September.
