Whale sharks. That's the headline, and it's not overstated. South Ari Atoll has the most consistent whale shark sightings in the Maldives, with encounters possible every month of the year. The sharks follow a plankton-rich corridor along the atoll's outer reef edge, and boats from multiple resorts and liveaboards run daily snorkel and dive excursions to find them. The animals here are mostly juveniles, 4 to 8 metres long, and they often feed near the surface where the water is thick with plankton.

Beyond the whale sharks, South Ari has proper thila diving. Kudarah Thila is a stunner: a small pinnacle dropping from 12 to 30 metres, with overhangs draped in soft coral and grey reef sharks patrolling the base. Dhigurah's outer reef attracts nurse sharks and eagle rays. Rangali Madivaru serves as a manta cleaning and feeding station, with predictable aggregations during the southwest monsoon when plankton blooms hit the western reef face.

The atoll stretches about 50 kilometres south of North Ari, and the whale shark zone concentrates along the southern and western outer edge from Dhigurah to Maamigili. Several dedicated dive resorts operate within the atoll, including the well-known LUX*, Sun Siyam, and Lily Beach. Getting here requires a seaplane transfer from Malé (30 to 40 minutes) or a domestic flight to Maamigili airport followed by a short boat ride.

Conditions are consistently good. Water temperatures hold at 27 to 30°C, visibility ranges from 10 to 25 metres (lower when the plankton that attracts the whale sharks is thickest, which is a trade-off you'll happily accept). The thila dives suit experienced divers comfortable at 20 to 30 metres with current. Whale shark encounters are typically snorkel-based, so all levels can participate. A 3mm suit or even just a rashguard covers the temperature.
